Obsessed

Standard

Not a single breath of you
I breathed in, is alive inside
Being so close to you was toxic

Toxic

Toxic

Toxic

I am poisonous
I am putrefying
Beware of my broken thorns
You touch it, you may die
Don’t push me away yet
Leave me where I belong

Domesticated,

Helpless like a fish,

A fish
Bought and brought up
In gaze of glass
Released into the wild
Baffled at big waters
Of storms and splashes
Hard to swim or dive
Learnt to float
But this fear of freedom
Where shall I hide?

There is a globe inside the glass
Skin shackled to the jar
Let it rot
Where it belongs
Here beside you
With your gaze stuck at the glass pot;
O you look at me
Observe me
See me through agonized
I will smile with blood brimming my eyes
For I am watched
If not loved and prized

and how time flies…. 🙂 🙂

The fish always learn to shed off the skin of habit and break the glass to freedom and new opportunities…..

What is next to come? Only tomorrow will tell …..

  1. “Bought and brought up, in a gaze of glass”.
This is such a telling line that I can particularly identify with, as woman. It reminds me of past experiences where I’ve been objectified and made to feel like I was “owned”.
A powerful and impactful poem. The closing line, “for I am watched, if not loved and prized”, holds a wealth of very disturbing implications that I readily identify with.
Thank you for sharing this stunning piece of poetry. I look forward to following and reading more of your work!

  2. I read this and am reminded how much I love the way you arrange words …. like they are notes of an unheard symphony. Imagine … no one ever wrote this exactly like you. Ever.
You are unique and I am ever drawn to you and your creativity.

  3. I was so close tears reading this. How I have fought domestication, toxicity, observation as though under a microscope (or in this case a glass), and so much more. This fish is learning how to shed the harsh, the painful, death, and to swim to freedom, even if that freedom is terrifying. Wow, Shefali, another really powerful, moving experience I’ve had here. You are incredible the way you arrange words together to express emotions that only some of us struggle to express. Fantastic!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  5. This is so deeply beautiful and intense – freedom as a choice can be so scary to the one accustomed to the gaze and the fear in confinement. The amount of momentum required to break free is unimaginable and the excruciating feeling of being stuck itself is comforting. You have a way of truly tugging my heart and beautifully so.
